Journal Entry 9

1. What is the writer trying to find out more about through their research (what research question guides her work)?
The writer is trying to find out how students construct themselves and how things around them has an affect on the construction of “self”. Numerous questions guide her research like “What does this variance reveal in terms of the work completed at St. Augustine?” and “How does student self-representation vary within and among genres at St. Augustine College?”

2. How does this author collect the data she needs to answer her question?
She observed and analyzed the students’ genres.

3. What sort of genres do you see your peers using as forms of “self-representation”?
The sorts of genres my peers use are how they dress, how they speak, the music they listen to, and how they express their feelings.

1. What is the writer trying to find out more about through their research (what research question guides his work)?
Through research the writer is trying to find out more about how authentic rock music is and the audience’s response to the music guides his work.

2. What sort of texts or sources does the author quote from to build his argument?
He uses books, critic reviews, and artists.

3. In what ways do you see others around you attempting to establish their “authenticity”?
I see others around me attempting their own authenticity by the way they present themselves, the clothes they wear and the body art, the way they speak and they way they act.

1.What is the writer trying to find out more about through their research (what research question guides their work)?
The writer was trying to find out the processes of editors writing professional editors writing and strategies by observing and examining some writers. “What defines revision in a professional context? How is their revision process influenced by the mandate they receive, their concept of revision, and their experience?”

2.What is the research methodology of this article (how do they collect their information, and how do they analyze the information they collect)?
They separated the editors into two groups based on experience and then based on their conception of the task.

3.How does professional editing differ from how students revise their own work?
Professional editors, unlike students, are paid therefore they put more effort into it because it’s their job.

Journal Entry 3: “Inventing the University” by David Bartholomae

1) What does Bartholomae mean when he says that students must “invent the university” when they write in college?

When Bartholomae says “invent the university” he means that the students become one with the university. The student is supposed to do as they do; “go with the flow” and yet, still stand out.

2) What does Bartholomae suggest is a way for students to become “insiders” within academic discourse?

Bartholomae suggests that the students must take advantage of their voice, the opportunity always doesn’t present itself.

3)Summarize some of the differences between the two examples of student writing that Bartholomae examines, and Bartholomae’s opinion of these examples.

CLAIM: There should be a ban on cell phone use while driving

QUALIFIERS: There should be a ban in the U.S. on cell phone use while driving

DATA: Because it is a distraction



GROUNDS: It is a distraction because it causes crashes


WARRANT: National Safety Council wants road safety


BACKING: "The problem is of an enormous order of magnitude, and it's only getting worse. Many people know that using a cell phone while driving is dangerous, but they don't know how dangerous. And it's legal. It's legal to do something on the road that endangers your life and endangers the life of other folks around you."said council president and chief executive officer Janet Froetscher.

Six percent of crashes each year nationwide. That's 636,000 crashes, 330,000 injuries, 12,000 serious injuries and 2,600 deaths.
